Puss in Boots and the Giant Slime

In a frosty and spooky forest there lived a girl and a boy who went to cut some wood. Their names were Julia and Jack. Julia went down to the river and started to fish. Suddenly a mysterious creature pulled her in and dragged her down deeply to the floor but luckily she had goggles and the breathing pipe. She swam back up pulling the creature that was clinging to her leg. "Help help!" she cried and also shouted at the same time. Jack quickly made a lasso and threw it over her head and with a mighty pull he tossed her into the air and caught Julia in his muscular arms. They were so scared when they heard rumbling and thought it was a wild beast. It was just a cat. When Julia and Jack saw the cat they were shocked to hear it talk. "Hello I'm Puss can you give some food and water. I'm very hungry." At midnight they went for a long walk. Suddenly a giant slime came and devoured Puss and said "This is what you get for setting fire to my village and now I'm all alone." Jack and Julia were terrified to see what had happened to their friend Puss. His real name was Puss in Boots. So Julia ripped open the slime and scooped its heart all up. "Yuck, yuck, yuck" she screamed. Luckily Puss was alive but had been in the filth for a very long time. He almost suffocated. So Puss in Boots had a bath because he smelt like pool Off went Julia to the river again and off went Jack and Puss to cut some wood down for their fire.

We were so lucky once again this year to have the Pakuranga Rotary Club support us with our learning! Two wonderful Rotary members came and gave each of us in year four our very own dictionary! We've been using them to learn new words and their definitions so that we can use them in our writing and in our conversations with others. Thank you Rotary Club...you are FANTASTIC!!!

Kidnapped by a Pirate - by Adriel

Silently moving through the night's fog, a dark shadow came closer and closer. It was a pirate ship! You could hear the sound of nothing but small waves slapping against the sides of the boat. Then out of nowhere came an angry voice. It was coming from the ship captain who had a problem. She was furious because she had no treasure. It wasn't long before daylight had come again and the irate ship had reached an island in the middle of the pacific ocean. The captain was excited because now she could hopefully steal treasure from the people. She came up with a cruel and cunning plan. The pirates were sent off to steal valuable items from houses. One nasty pirate was told to kidnap a child to hold ransom. When their arms were full and they could carry no more, the pirates boarded the ship. The child was weeping and wailing for her family. The pirate told her to shush........

This is the start of a story that Adriel has written after looking at a picture that her teacher gave her. The picture was of a pirate ship sailing at night through the fog. Adriel spent time thinking about what a narrative needs to have....a beginning, middle, and end. She thought about vocabulary words and details as well as different ways to begin her sentences. Her teacher thinks that she has done a fabulous job creating mood and taking her audience on an adventure.

Chocolate Chirp Cookies

Chocolate Chirp Cookies, makes a dozen or so cookies.

Ingredients:

• 2 ¼ cups cricket flour
• 1 tsp. baking soda
• 1 tsp. salt
• 1 cup butter, softened
• ¾ cup sugar
• ¾ cup brown sugar
• 1 tsp. vanilla
• 2 eggs
• 1 12-ounce pkg. chocolate chips
• ½ cup dry-roasted chopped crickets

Directions: 
Preheat oven to 375 deg F.
In saucepan heat 1 12-ounce pkg. chocolate chips until melted. Or melt in small bowl in microwave.
Dip dry-roasted crickets into mixture and lay flat on drying pan or plate.
In small bowl, combine flour, baking soda and salt; set aside.
In large bowl, combine butter, sugar, brown sugar and vanilla; beat until creamy.
Beat in eggs.
Gradually add cricket flour mixture and mix well.
Stir in chocolate covered crickets.
Drop by rounded measuring teaspoonfuls onto ungreased cookie sheet.
Bake for 8-10 minutes.
